Twist Superman

Twist Superman Exercise Description

Twist Superman is a prone, bodyweight variation of the classic “Superman” that integrates a small, controlled thoracic rotation with a contralateral arm–leg lift. It primarily trains the spinal extensors (erector spinae) and gluteus maximus, with the obliques and deep core assisting to resist excessive rotation. The alternating pattern challenges coordination and positional control while reinforcing a neutral neck and stable pelvis. Emphasis is on reaching long rather than lifting high to avoid lumbar hyperextension. Performed with slow, deliberate motion, it builds awareness of cross-body posterior chain engagement and midline stability.

How To Do The Twist Superman Exercise

‘- Set up prone on a mat, legs extended hip-width, arms long overhead, palms down. Keep forehead hovering or lightly resting on the mat, eyes toward the floor.
– Lightly brace the abdomen (think “ribs down”), squeeze glutes gently, and keep the pelvis level.
– Set shoulder blades by drawing them slightly down and in without shrugging.
– Inhale to prepare.
– Exhale: lift and reach the right arm and left leg a few inches off the floor. Think length, not height.
– Add a small, controlled upper-back (thoracic) rotation toward the right as you reach—keep hips and pelvis facing the floor. Avoid twisting from the lower back.
– Keep the neck neutral (no looking up). Maintain even pressure through the front of both hips.
– Inhale: lower with control to the start.
– Repeat on the opposite side (left arm, right leg), rotating slightly toward the left through the upper back only.
– Throughout, move slowly, keep the abdomen lightly braced, and stop the range before any lumbar “pinch,” hip hike, or loss of pelvic level.

Twist Superman Tips

‘- Keep legs extended hip-width and arms long overhead with palms down as you set up.
– Let your forehead hover or rest lightly on the mat with eyes looking toward the floor.
– Lightly brace the abdomen (“ribs down”), gently squeeze the glutes, and keep the pelvis level before you start.
– Draw the shoulder blades slightly down and in without shrugging.
– As you exhale, lift and reach the opposite arm and leg only a few inches off the floor, focusing on length, not height.
– Add only a small, controlled rotation through the upper back toward the lifted arm side while keeping hips and pelvis facing the floor.
– Keep the neck neutral and avoid looking up while you move.
– Maintain even pressure through the front of both hips as you rotate and lift.
– Move slowly, keep the abdomen lightly braced, and stop before you feel any lumbar “pinch,” hip hike, or loss of pelvic level.

Twist Superman Beginner Introduction

Twist Superman is a floor-based bodyweight move performed lying face down on a mat, designed to challenge the entire backside of the body in a coordinated, cross‑pattern way. One arm and the opposite leg glide upward together while the upper back gently turns toward the raised arm, creating a subtle rotational demand. The hips stay squared to the ground, encouraging the glutes and lower back to share the workload while the abs and side abs help limit unnecessary twisting.

The motion is unhurried and smooth, with an emphasis on feeling long from fingertips to toes rather than lifting high. The head stays aligned with the spine and the gaze toward the floor, supporting a relaxed neck. As the limbs alternate from side to side, the pattern highlights how the right and left halves of the body communicate, building awareness of back‑line engagement, hip steadiness, and a strong center that resists wobbling through the middle.
