Suspender Woodchopper

Suspender Woodchopper Exercise Description

The Suspender Woodchopper is a standing rotational core exercise performed with a suspension trainer. It emphasizes the obliques as prime movers, with the transverse abdominis and rectus abdominis stabilizing the trunk while the hips and shoulders coordinate the diagonal “chop.” Using the straps provides adjustable bodyweight resistance and encourages full-body tension while keeping arms long and motion smooth. The goal is controlled rotation through the hips and thoracic spine with a neutral lumbar spine—no wrenching or twisting from the low back. Expect strong engagement of the scapular stabilizers to keep the shoulders down and the handles tracking cleanly. Maintain constant strap tension and a steady torso brace throughout each repetition. Perform on both sides to train symmetrical rotational strength and control.

How To Do The Suspender Woodchopper Exercise

‘- Set the straps to a length that allows full arm reach with tension.
– Stand side-on to the anchor, feet about hip- to shoulder-width, slight stagger.
– Hold both handles together with both hands, arms long, outside shoulder high.
– Brace the abdomen; ribs stacked over pelvis; shoulders down and back.
– Create light lean away from the anchor so the straps stay taut.
– Initiate by rotating hips and torso together, pivoting the back foot.
– Sweep the handles diagonally from high outside shoulder to opposite hip.
– Keep elbows nearly straight; guide with the torso, not the arms.
– Pause briefly, then reverse under control to the start position.
– Maintain neutral spine; avoid lumbar arching or isolated low-back twisting.
– Keep head and chest moving with the torso; do not crank the neck.
– Step your stance in or out as needed to keep constant strap tension.
– Repeat for the opposite side.

Suspender Woodchopper Tips

‘- Set strap length so your arms can fully reach while the straps stay under tension.
– Stand side-on to the anchor with a slight staggered stance, feet about hip- to shoulder-width.
– Hold both handles together at the outside shoulder with long arms and shoulders down and back.
– Brace the abdomen with ribs stacked over the pelvis to keep the torso solid.
– Lean lightly away from the anchor so the straps remain taut throughout the motion.
– Initiate the chop by rotating hips and torso together, pivoting the back foot.
– Sweep the handles diagonally from high outside shoulder to opposite hip, guiding with torso rotation rather than the arms.
– Keep elbows nearly straight and maintain a neutral spine, avoiding lumbar arching or isolated low-back twisting.
– Move head and chest with the torso so you don’t crank the neck.
– Adjust your stance in or out as needed to maintain constant strap tension and repeat equally on both sides.

Suspender Woodchopper Beginner Introduction

The Suspender Woodchopper is a standing rotation drill using a suspension trainer to challenge the entire core in a diagonal, chopping pattern. The person faces sideways to the anchor point while the straps create resistance against a long-armed sweep from a high position to a lower one across the body. Side abs take on most of the twisting effort, while the deeper abs and front abs work together to keep the midsection firm and steady. Hips and shoulders move as a unit, so the turn comes from the hips and mid-back rather than cranking through the lower spine.

Because the handles are connected to straps, the load comes from bodyweight and can change simply by adjusting distance from the anchor. This setup encourages tension from feet to hands, with strong involvement from the shoulders and upper back to keep the shoulder blades anchored and the handle path smooth. Throughout the motion, the spine stays long, the head and chest travel with the torso, and the straps remain engaged, building rotational strength and control on both sides of the body.
