The skater squat is a single-leg squat variation performed with the rear foot hovering off the floor. It trains a knee-dominant pattern while challenging balance and body control. Primary emphasis is on the quadriceps of the stance leg, with the gluteus maximus assisting hip extension and the hamstrings contributing to controlled descent. The hip abductors/adductors and ankle musculature stabilize the pelvis and foot, while the core braces to maintain a neutral spine. Because depth and support can be adjusted, this bodyweight drill is useful for developing unilateral strength and alignment without equipment, provided technique and control are maintained.

How To Do The Skater Squat Exercise
‘- Stand tall with feet hip-width. Brace lightly, ribs stacked over pelvis, eyes forward.
– Shift weight fully to your right foot. Lift the left foot off the floor and hold it behind you with the knee bent; keep toes off the ground.
– Set the right foot as a tripod (big toe, little toe, heel). Keep the arch active.
– Reach the hips slightly back (small hip hinge) as the right knee bends and tracks over the second–third toe.
– Descend under control, allowing a natural torso incline while keeping a neutral spine and level pelvis.
– As you lower, aim your left knee toward the floor behind your right heel; hover or lightly tap without loading the left foot.
– Stop before the right heel lifts or balance is lost.
– Press through the midfoot/heel to stand, extending the right knee and hip while maintaining knee-to-toe alignment.
– Repeat on the left side with the same cues.
– Keep shoulders relaxed, rear foot off the ground, and avoid the stance knee collapsing inward. Breathe steadily and maintain core tension throughout.

Skater Squat Beginner Introduction
