Lever Glute Press

Lever Glute Press Exercise Description

The Lever Glute Press is a single-leg hip extension performed on a leverage machine with the torso supported by a chest pad. Its primary target is the gluteus maximus, with assistance from the hamstrings, while the gluteus medius/minimus and core musculature help keep the pelvis level and the spine stable. Because the machine provides external support and a fixed path, you can focus on smooth hip drive without balance demands. The key is maintaining a neutral spine and square hips so the motion occurs at the hip—avoid arching the lower back or rotating the pelvis. Press through the midfoot/heel and keep a relatively constant knee angle to emphasize hip extension mechanics. Use a controlled tempo throughout, moving only as far as you can keep the pelvis level and the ribs stacked over the torso.

How To Do The Lever Glute Press Exercise

‘- Adjust chest pad height so your torso rests comfortably with a neutral spine; grasp the handles.
– Place one foot on the lever footplate, the other foot on the floor platform; keep the working knee softly bent.
– Brace the core, draw shoulders down and back, and square the hips so the pelvis stays level.
– Initiate by driving the footplate back/up from the hip; press through the midfoot/heel without straightening the knee.
– Keep ribs down and head neutral; do not arch the lower back or rotate the pelvis.
– Stop when the hip is fully extended without lumbar extension; briefly hold the end position with controlled glute contraction.
– Return the lever slowly by allowing the hip to flex; maintain torso contact with the pad and control the footplate—no bouncing.
– Keep toes pointing forward and knee tracking in line with the toes throughout.
– Repeat on the other side with the same setup and technique.

Lever Glute Press Tips

‘- Adjust the chest pad so your torso can rest comfortably while keeping a neutral spine.
– Before pressing, brace your core and draw your shoulders down and back to stabilize your torso.
– Square your hips so the pelvis stays level and the motion occurs at the hip, not the lower back.
– Press the footplate by driving from the hip and pushing through your midfoot/heel.
– Keep the working knee softly bent and avoid straightening it to maintain a relatively constant knee angle.
– Keep your ribs down, head neutral, and avoid arching your lower back or rotating the pelvis.
– Stop the press when the hip is fully extended without allowing lumbar extension, then briefly hold the glute contraction.
– Maintain torso contact with the chest pad and control the lever on the way back—no bouncing.
– Keep your toes pointing forward and the knee tracking in line with the toes throughout each rep.
– Only move through a range where you can keep the pelvis level and the ribs stacked over the torso.

Lever Glute Press Beginner Introduction

The Lever Glute Press is a machine-based single-leg hip extension where the body rests against a chest pad while one leg works against a levered footplate. With the torso supported and the motion guided by the machine’s track, balance demands are reduced, allowing smoother, more deliberate hip drive throughout each repetition.

This movement mainly targets the glutes, with added work from the hamstrings, while the outer glutes and core assist in holding the pelvis steady and the spine supported. The aim is a pure hinging action at the hip rather than movement coming from the lower back, with force traveling through the middle and back of the foot as the lever moves. The knee angle changes only slightly, which highlights hip extension rather than a swinging or kicking motion. A slow, controlled rhythm is central to this exercise, with the working leg traveling only as far as pelvic alignment and rib position can stay organized, without arching through the lower back or letting the hips twist.
