EZ Bar Shoulder Press Sit-Up
EZ Bar Shoulder Press Sit-Up Exercise Description
The EZ-Bar Shoulder Press Sit-up combines controlled trunk flexion with an overhead press to train the anterior core and shoulder pressing mechanics in one sequence. You’ll perform a sit-up while maintaining a strong abdominal brace, then press the EZ bar overhead from a tall, upright position. The rectus abdominis drives trunk flexion, with the obliques stabilizing; hip flexors assist the sit-up. During the press, the anterior deltoid and triceps extend the elbows, while the scapulae upwardly rotate via the serratus anterior and trapezius. The angled grips of the EZ bar allow a comfortable, neutral wrist line while you keep ribs stacked over the pelvis and avoid lumbar extension throughout.

How To Do The EZ Bar Shoulder Press Sit-Up Exercise
‘- Lie supine on a mat with knees bent, feet flat, hip-width apart.
– Hold the EZ bar at the upper chest with a shoulder-width overhand grip; thumbs wrapped, wrists neutral, forearms vertical under the bar.
– Set your brace: exhale gently, bring ribs down toward the pelvis, and keep the neck neutral (chin slightly tucked).
– Initiate the sit-up by curling the upper back off the floor, then continue to a tall upright position with the torso stacked over the hips; keep the bar close to the chest.
– Pause upright; maintain ribcage-down, pelvis-neutral alignment.
– From this stacked position, press the bar overhead in a straight path, finishing with elbows extended and biceps near the ears; allow the scapulae to upwardly rotate.
– Keep ribs down and avoid arching the lower back during the press.
– Lower the bar under control to the upper chest, keeping forearms vertical and wrists neutral.
– Reverse the sit-up by lowering the torso with control back to the floor, segment by segment, maintaining the brace.
– Reset your position and repeat with the same smooth tempo and bar path.
EZ Bar Shoulder Press Sit-Up Tips
‘- Keep your feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart throughout the movement.
– Grip the EZ bar at shoulder width with an overhand grip, thumbs wrapped and wrists neutral.
– Stack your forearms vertically under the bar so the bar stays directly over your forearms.
– Set your brace by gently exhaling, bringing the ribs toward the pelvis, and keeping the chin slightly tucked.
– Start the sit-up by curling your upper back off the floor first, then continue up to a tall, upright torso over the hips.
– Keep the bar close to your chest as you rise into the upright position.
– At the top, pause in a tall, stacked position with the ribcage down and pelvis neutral.
– Press the bar overhead in a straight path until the elbows are extended and the biceps are near your ears, allowing the shoulder blades to upwardly rotate.
– Keep the ribs down and avoid arching the lower back while pressing overhead.
– Lower the bar under control back to the upper chest, then lower your torso segment by segment to the floor, maintaining the same smooth tempo.
EZ Bar Shoulder Press Sit-Up Beginner Introduction
The EZ-Bar Shoulder Press Sit-up blends an abdominal sit-up with an overhead bar press into one fluid movement. Performed on a mat with an EZ bar resting near the upper chest, it moves from a controlled rise of the torso to a strong, upright position, finishing with the bar guided overhead. This sequence challenges the abs and side abs through the curling phase, with help from the hip flexors, then shifts demand toward the front shoulders, triceps, and upper back muscles as the bar travels upward.
Throughout the motion, the midsection is organized to limit extra movement through the lower back, encouraging smooth bending through the spine on the way up and down. The angled hand positions on the EZ bar support a more natural wrist line as the arms straighten overhead. Because the sit-up and press are linked, the exercise highlights timing, posture, and control, making the core and shoulders work together rather than in isolation.
