Chin Tuck Hold

Chin Tuck Hold Exercise Description

The Chin Tuck Hold is an isometric cervical retraction drill that reinforces neutral head and neck alignment. It emphasizes axial elongation—sliding the head straight backward without tipping up or down—to position the ears over the shoulders. The primary focus is activation of the deep cervical flexors (longus colli and longus capitis) while minimizing excessive motion at the upper cervical spine. You’ll feel a gentle engagement at the front of the neck and a lengthening sensation at the base of the skull, not pressure or strain. It can be performed seated, standing, or supine, and uses a small, comfortable range of motion. This drill supports efficient posture for daily tasks like desk work by teaching controlled head positioning.

How To Do The Chin Tuck Hold Exercise

‘- Stand or sit tall with ribs stacked over pelvis and shoulders relaxed.
– Gaze straight ahead; jaw and teeth relaxed; lips lightly closed.
– Without looking up or down, slide your chin straight backward, creating a subtle “double chin.”
– Think “lengthen through the crown of the head” to avoid jamming the neck.
– Keep the throat soft; feel gentle tension deep in the front of the neck, not in the jaw or upper traps.
– Breathe normally and keep the torso still; do not round the upper back.
– Option for feedback: perform lightly against a wall or lying supine so the back of the skull senses gentle contact.
– Maintain the position with minimal effort; release slowly and return to neutral with eyes level.

Chin Tuck Hold Beginner Introduction

The Chin Tuck Hold is a gentle, static neck exercise that trains a smooth backward glide of the head while the face stays level. Rather than bending or tipping, the skull shifts straight back over the body, encouraging a tall, stacked posture where the head feels lightly “suspended” above the shoulders. This small motion brings subtle work to the front of the neck and a sense of space and length around the base of the skull, without strain or compressive feeling.

During this drill, the rest of the body remains calm and quiet, turning the attention to precise head placement and easy, natural breathing. Many people use it in everyday positions—such as sitting at a desk, standing, or lying on the back—to reinforce efficient alignment for daily life. Some like the added awareness of a wall or floor gently touching the back of the head, which highlights the backward glide without pushing. Overall, it serves as a simple way to practice controlled neck positioning and more upright posture in a very small, comfortable range.
