Twist And Side Crunch

Twist And Side Crunch Exercise Description

Twist and Side Crunch is a standing, bodyweight core drill performed rhythmically to blend trunk rotation with controlled lateral flexion. It emphasizes the external and internal obliques as primary movers, with the rectus abdominis assisting during the crunch and the hip flexors helping to lift the knee. The goal is crisp, controlled motion from the ribcage while maintaining a tall, neutral posture. Rotation should occur mainly through the thoracic spine, with the pelvis facing forward to limit excessive lumbar twisting. The side crunch focuses on shortening one side of the trunk while keeping the opposite side long, avoiding forward hunching. Performed continuously, it promotes coordination, posture control, and core engagement using only body weight and minimal space.

How To Do The Twist And Side Crunch Exercise

‘- Stand tall, feet about hip-width, knees soft. Ribs stacked over pelvis, chin slightly tucked, shoulders down and back.
– Place fingertips lightly at your temples (do not pull on your head) or cross your arms across the chest.
– Brace your midsection gently as if preparing for a cough; keep a long spine.
– Twist: Rotate your ribcage to the left while lifting the right knee toward the left elbow. Bring elbow toward knee via the trunk, not the neck. Keep the pelvis mostly forward; use a comfortable range.
– Return to center under control, regaining tall posture.
– Side crunch (left): Lift the left knee slightly and draw the left elbow toward the left hip by laterally flexing the trunk. Keep the opposite side long and avoid bending forward.
– Return to tall stance.
– Repeat on the right side, alternating: twist (opposite elbow to knee), then side crunch (same side).
– Move lightly and rhythmically. Breathe continuously, exhaling on each crunch. Keep eyes forward and avoid excessive lumbar rotation or side-bending.

Twist And Side Crunch Tips

‘- Stand tall with feet about hip-width and knees soft, keeping ribs stacked over pelvis and chin slightly tucked.
– Keep shoulders down and back and maintain a long spine throughout the movement.
– Place fingertips lightly at your temples without pulling on your head, or cross your arms across your chest.
– Gently brace your midsection as if preparing for a cough before starting and as you move.
– In the twist, rotate your ribcage while lifting the opposite knee toward the elbow, keeping the pelvis mostly facing forward in a comfortable range.
– Bring elbow toward knee by moving through the trunk, not by pulling with the neck.
– After each twist or side crunch, return to center under control and re-establish a tall posture.
– In the side crunch, lift the knee slightly and draw the elbow toward the hip by laterally flexing the trunk, keeping the opposite side long.
– Avoid bending forward during the side crunch and avoid excessive lumbar rotation or side-bending.
– Move lightly and rhythmically, keeping eyes forward and breathing continuously, exhaling on each crunch.

Twist And Side Crunch Beginner Introduction

Twist and Side Crunch is a standing, bodyweight core movement that links a cross-body twist with a same-side crunch in a smooth, repeating pattern. It uses minimal space and relies entirely on bodyweight, with the arms arranged near the head or across the chest. The motion comes mainly from the ribcage and upper torso, while the hips remain relatively steady and the body stays tall, so the action feels crisp rather than sloppy or loose.

This exercise centers on the side abs, with the abs helping during each crunch and the hip flexors lifting the knees. One phase rotates the torso so an elbow and opposite knee travel toward each other; the other phase bends the body sideways so the elbow and knee on the same side draw closer while the other side of the waist lengthens. Alternating these patterns rhythmically encourages better control of posture, coordinated upper–lower body movement, and steady core activation throughout the set.
