Side Plank Rotation

Side Plank Rotation Exercise Description

Side Plank Rotation is a bodyweight core exercise that blends lateral trunk stability with controlled thoracic rotation. It primarily targets the external and internal obliques and transverse abdominis while the quadratus lumborum helps keep the pelvis level. The supporting shoulder works to stabilize the scapula, and the hip abductors (especially the gluteus medius) assist in maintaining stacked hips and a straight body line. The “thread and reach” arm action encourages rotation through the upper back while the lumbar spine stays neutral. Performed with steady breathing and precise control, it builds the ability to resist lateral flexion as you rotate, promoting strong, coordinated trunk mechanics for everyday movement and sport.

How To Do The Side Plank Rotation Exercise

‘- Lie on your side with legs extended; place your forearm on the floor with the elbow directly under the shoulder. Stack or lightly stagger your feet.
– Align ear–shoulder–hip–ankle in one straight line. Brace your abdominal wall, keep ribs down, and lift hips to a solid side plank.
– Press the forearm firmly into the floor to center the shoulder; keep the neck long and gaze forward.
– Raise the top arm straight up to stack the shoulders.
– Initiate from the ribcage: sweep the top arm under your torso, rotating through the thoracic spine. Keep hips stacked and level; avoid lumbar twisting.
– Pause briefly when shoulders approach parallel to the floor, maintaining a long, neutral spine.
– Rotate back open, reaching the top arm to the ceiling to restack the shoulders.
– Breathe steadily throughout; avoid letting the support shoulder shrug, the hips sag or pike, or the head jut forward.

Side Plank Rotation Tips

‘- Place your forearm on the floor with the elbow directly under your shoulder.
– Align your ear, shoulder, hip, and ankle in one straight line.
– Brace your abdominal wall and keep your ribs down before lifting into the side plank.
– Press your forearm firmly into the floor to help center the supporting shoulder.
– Keep your neck long with your gaze forward while holding the plank.
– Raise your top arm straight up so your shoulders stack before you begin rotating.
– Initiate the rotation from your ribcage, sweeping the top arm under your torso through the thoracic spine.
– Keep your hips stacked and level, avoiding twisting through your lower back.
– Pause briefly when your shoulders approach parallel to the floor.
– Breathe steadily throughout the movement.

Side Plank Rotation Beginner Introduction

Side Plank Rotation is a bodyweight core movement that blends a strong side plank position with controlled turning through the upper back. The body is supported on one forearm and the edge of the feet while the top arm sweeps beneath the torso and then opens again, creating a smooth, circular action. This combination of support and rotation highlights stability on one side of the body while the upper spine moves through a gentle twist.

The exercise centers on the side abs, deep abs, and side lower back, with the hips and upper glutes helping the legs and pelvis stay aligned. The supporting shoulder and upper back play a stabilizing role as they hold the body steady against the pull of gravity. Breathing stays calm and continuous, matching the deliberate pace of the motion. Over time, this pattern helps the trunk handle turning forces without collapsing sideways, which can translate well to everyday tasks and sports that involve reaching, pivoting, or changing direction.
