Scorpion Stretch

Scorpion Stretch Exercise Description

The Scorpion Stretch is a prone, bodyweight mobility drill that combines hip extension with controlled trunk rotation. It’s designed to create a gentle stretch across the front of the hip and thigh of the moving leg (hip flexors and rectus femoris) while improving rotational control through the pelvis and spine. With the arms anchored in a “T,” you guide one heel toward the opposite hand without forcing range, keeping the shoulders grounded and the ribcage stacked. The goal is smooth, pain-free motion and a mild stretch—never pinching or sharp pressure in the low back. Performed with steady breathing and a lightly braced core, this stretch can help you explore hip extension and rotational mobility safely and with control.

How To Do The Scorpion Stretch Exercise

‘- Lie prone on a mat with arms out to the sides at shoulder height, palms down.
– Set a neutral neck and spine; lightly brace your abdominals and keep ribs down.
– Bend your right knee to about 90 degrees.
– Squeeze your right glute to initiate hip extension; lift the knee slightly off the floor.
– Sweep the right leg across your body, aiming the right heel toward your left hand.
– Keep both shoulders and chest in contact with the floor; do not force the foot to the ground.
– Maintain a long spine—avoid excessive low‑back arching; move only to a comfortable stretch.
– Breathe steadily; exhale as the leg travels across, pause briefly at the end range.
– Return the leg to the starting position with control and repeat on the other side.
– If shoulder tension occurs, bring the arms slightly below shoulder height while keeping them anchored.

Scorpion Stretch Tips

‘- Set up prone with your arms in a “T” at shoulder height, palms down, to anchor your upper body.
– Keep your neck and spine neutral with ribs down and a light abdominal brace before you move.
– Bend the working knee to about 90 degrees before sweeping the leg across.
– Initiate the motion by squeezing the glute of the moving leg and lifting the knee slightly off the floor into hip extension.
– As you sweep the leg across, aim the heel toward the opposite hand without forcing the foot to the ground.
– Keep both shoulders and your chest in contact with the floor to control trunk rotation.
– Maintain a long spine and avoid excessive arching in the low back; move only to a comfortable, mild stretch.
– Focus on smooth, pain-free motion with a gentle stretch across the front of the hip and thigh of the moving leg.
– Breathe steadily, exhaling as the leg travels across and pausing briefly at end range before returning.
– If you feel shoulder tension, lower your arms slightly below shoulder height while keeping them anchored.

Scorpion Stretch Beginner Introduction

The Scorpion Stretch is a floor-based, bodyweight movement performed while lying on your stomach, blending hip motion with gentle rotation through the midsection. One leg bends and travels across the body toward the opposite side, while the upper body remains grounded with the arms stretched wide. This creates a light, sustained stretch through the front of the hip and front of the thigh on the moving leg, with the core gently engaged to guide the twist.

Because the upper body stays anchored, the emphasis falls on controlled motion through the hips, pelvis, and spine rather than on forcing the foot to the floor. The sensation is intended to be easy and comfortable, with attention on smooth breathing and relaxed shoulders. Over time, this pattern can be a way to explore hip extension and rotational mobility with a calm, steady tempo, encouraging better awareness of how the lower body and trunk move together while maintaining a feeling of support around the middle of the body.
