Squat Twist

Squat Twist Exercise Description

The Squat Twist is a bodyweight variation that combines a standard squat with controlled trunk rotation at the top position. It primarily targets the quadriceps and gluteus maximus, with assistance from the hamstrings and adductors to control hip and knee motion. The rotational component engages the obliques and deep core to stabilize the torso as you turn. Performing the twist after returning to a tall stand helps keep the spine neutral and reduces unwanted shear while reinforcing knee tracking and foot stability. This movement pattern develops lower-body strength and control while adding upper-back (thoracic) rotation and coordination without external load.

How To Do The Squat Twist Exercise

‘- Stand with feet hip-to-shoulder width apart, toes turned slightly out; distribute pressure across the whole foot.
– Set a tall posture: ribs stacked over pelvis, shoulders down, gaze forward, light abdominal brace.
– Position arms forward or at chest height for balance.
– Sit the hips back and down as the knees flex; keep heels down and knees tracking over the second–third toes.
– Descend only as far as you can maintain a neutral spine and stable arches.
– Drive through midfoot to return to a full, tall stand with hips and knees extended.
– At the top, rotate the torso to the right, moving through the upper back; keep pelvis facing mostly forward and both feet planted.
– Return to center.
– Repeat the squat, then rotate to the left at the top.
– Keep movements smooth; avoid knee valgus, rounding the low back, or twisting while you’re in the bottom of the squat.

Squat Twist Tips

‘- Stand with feet hip-to-shoulder width apart, toes slightly out, and keep pressure across the whole foot.
– Set a tall posture with ribs stacked over pelvis, shoulders down, gaze forward, and a light abdominal brace before you move.
– Hold your arms forward or at chest height to help maintain balance.
– As you squat, sit the hips back and down, keeping your heels down and knees tracking over the second–third toes.
– Only descend as far as you can maintain a neutral spine and stable foot arches.
– Drive through the midfoot to return to a full, tall stand with hips and knees fully extended before twisting.
– Perform the twist at the top by rotating through the upper back while keeping the pelvis mostly facing forward and both feet planted.
– Alternate your trunk rotation side to side at the top of each squat (right after one rep, left after the next).
– Keep all movements smooth and controlled, avoiding knee valgus, rounding the low back, or twisting in the bottom of the squat.

Squat Twist Beginner Introduction

The Squat Twist blends a classic bodyweight squat with a gentle turn through the upper body, creating a simple yet coordinated full-body drill. As the legs bend and straighten, the front of the thighs and glutes take on most of the work, with support from the back of the thighs and inner thighs to guide the hips and knees. Once standing tall again, the added rotation through the upper back brings in the side abs and deep core muscles, turning a basic lower-body move into a more integrated challenge.

This combination places attention on smooth, controlled motion rather than speed or heavy resistance. The legs build strength and control through the bending phase, while the core and upper back contribute stability during the twist. Because the turn happens only after returning to an upright position, the spine stays in a comfortable alignment and the feet stay grounded throughout. The Squat Twist suits workouts where lower-body power, core engagement, and rotational coordination are all trained at once without any external equipment.
