Band Face Pull

Band Face Pull Exercise Description

The band face pull is a horizontal pulling exercise that targets the posterior deltoids, middle and lower trapezius, rhomboids, and the external rotators of the shoulder (infraspinatus and teres minor). It combines scapular retraction with shoulder external rotation, reinforcing controlled shoulder blade motion and balanced upper‑back strength. Performed with the band anchored near face height, you pull the elbows out and back while rotating the upper arms so the hands finish near the temples. Emphasis is on a neutral spine, level shoulders (avoid excessive shrugging), and smooth, controlled movement throughout.

How To Do The Band Face Pull Exercise

‘- Anchor the band at about upper‑chest to face height on a stable point.
– Stand tall with a slight knee bend; brace lightly and keep a neutral spine with ribs down and chin tucked.
– Grasp the band ends with a palms‑down or neutral grip; step back until there’s light tension.
– Set the shoulders by depressing and gently retracting the scapulae.
– Initiate the pull by drawing the elbows out and back to roughly shoulder height.
– As the band approaches you, externally rotate the shoulders so forearms become vertical and hands travel toward the temples/ears.
– Squeeze the shoulder blades together without shrugging; keep wrists straight.
– Return with control, allowing the arms to protract and rotate back to neutral without losing trunk position.
– Avoid: arching the low back, jutting the head forward, using momentum, letting elbows drop far below shoulder height or rise excessively above it, or pulling past the head.

Band Face Pull Tips

‘- Anchor the band at about upper‑chest to face height.
– Stand tall with a slight knee bend and maintain a neutral spine with ribs down.
– Keep your chin tucked to avoid jutting the head forward.
– Step back only until the band has light tension before starting.
– Depress and gently retract your shoulder blades before you begin pulling.
– Initiate the pull by driving the elbows out and back to around shoulder height.
– As the band approaches you, externally rotate so your forearms are vertical and hands travel toward your temples/ears.
– Squeeze your shoulder blades together without shrugging and keep your wrists straight.
– Return the band with control, allowing your arms to protract and rotate back to neutral without losing trunk position.
– Avoid arching your low back, using momentum, letting elbows rise too high or drop too low, or pulling past your head.

Band Face Pull Beginner Introduction

The band face pull is a resistance‑band exercise that emphasizes the rear shoulders, upper back, and rotator cuff. Using a band fixed roughly at head level, the movement blends pulling and rotation at the shoulder, so the shoulder blades glide back while the upper arms turn and the hands end up beside the head. This combination encourages strong, coordinated action around the shoulder joint rather than just arm pulling.

Because the band pulls from in front of the body, the exercise naturally encourages an upright stance, steady core, and level shoulder line. The motion highlights controlled shoulder‑blade movement and even strength across the back of the shoulders and upper back. The pull finishes with the elbows flared out near shoulder height, creating a distinct “face‑level row” feeling. A calm, deliberate pace is central to the exercise, supporting precise positioning of the head, spine, and shoulders while the arms move through the band’s resistance.
