Step-Up Exercise Description

The step-up is a unilateral lower-body strength exercise that trains a hip-and-knee extension pattern similar to climbing a stair. Primary movers are the gluteus maximus and quadriceps; the hamstrings and calf muscles assist, while the gluteus medius and core musculature stabilize the pelvis and trunk. Because you load one leg at a time, it emphasizes alignment and control—keeping the knee tracking over the toes and the pelvis level—while reinforcing a neutral spine. Use a stable step or box and place the entire lead foot on the surface so the heel stays down. Select a step height that allows you to keep an upright torso without hiking the hip or needing to push off the trailing leg. Move with deliberate control on both the ascent and the descent to keep the work on the lead leg and to protect joint alignment.

How To Do The Step-Up Exercise

‘- Stand tall facing a stable step/box; feet hip-width, toes forward.
– Place the entire right foot on the step (heel fully supported); ribs stacked over pelvis, spine neutral.
– Brace the core and set the pelvis level; keep eyes forward and shoulders down.
– Shift your weight onto the right leg before moving; do not jump or push off the back foot.
– Drive through the midfoot/heel of the right foot to extend the hip and knee and rise onto the step.
– Keep the right knee tracking over the second–third toe; avoid knee collapse inward or outward.
– Briefly stand tall on the step with hips and knees extended (no hyperextension), pelvis level, and glutes engaged.
– Initiate the descent by controlling through the right leg: hinge slightly at the hip, bend the right knee, and lower with the heel heavy.
– Reach the left foot to the floor softly, then bring the right foot down to return to the start.
– Maintain slow, controlled tempo throughout; avoid using momentum or bouncing.
– Repeat on the other side to train both legs.
– Common fixes: if the heel lifts, lower the step height; if the knee caves in, cue “press the knee out” in line with the toes; if the step wobbles, choose a more stable surface.
