Suspender Y Raise

Suspender Y Raise Exercise Description

The Suspender Y Raise is a suspension-trainer variation of the classic “Y” movement that builds shoulder and scapular control. You’ll create a stable plank with your body while raising straight arms overhead into a Y shape in the scapular plane (slightly forward of the torso), emphasizing coordinated motion of the shoulder blade and upper arm. Primary emphasis is on the lower and middle trapezius, with the serratus anterior assisting scapular upward rotation; the rotator cuff works to stabilize the glenohumeral joint. Keeping elbows straight and thumbs up (external rotation) helps center the humeral head and encourages clean overhead mechanics. This drill reinforces posture, shoulder blade rhythm, and overhead reach without loaded spinal extension when performed with a neutral spine and ribs stacked.

How To Do The Suspender Y Raise Exercise

‘- Set suspension straps to mid-length. Face the anchor, feet hip-width, and lean back into a straight-body plank from head to heels.
– Grip the handles lightly, wrists neutral, arms long in front at shoulder height, palms facing each other, thumbs up.
– Brace your midsection, align ribs over pelvis, and keep a neutral neck (gaze where the wall meets the ceiling).
– Pack the shoulders gently (no shrug), then initiate the motion from the shoulders—not the elbows.
– Raise straight arms overhead into a Y, approximately 30–45° forward of the frontal plane; keep thumbs pointing up.
– As the arms travel, allow the shoulder blades to upwardly rotate and posteriorly tilt while keeping them down away from the ears.
– Finish with biceps near ears, arms in line with the torso, trunk still in a rigid plank.
– Lower with control by reversing the path, maintaining straight elbows and steady torso.
– Breathe continuously; avoid rib flare or lumbar arching to “find” range.
– Avoid: bending the elbows, shrugging, gripping excessively, or letting the hips sag or pike.

Suspender Y Raise Tips

‘- Maintain a straight-body plank from head to heels as you lean back into the straps.
– Grip the handles lightly with neutral wrists, arms long at shoulder height, palms facing each other, thumbs up.
– Stack your ribs over your pelvis and keep a neutral neck by gazing where the wall meets the ceiling.
– Gently pack your shoulders without shrugging before you start the raise.
– Initiate the movement from the shoulders, not the elbows.
– Raise straight arms into a Y about 30–45° forward of your torso, keeping thumbs pointing up.
– Let the shoulder blades upwardly rotate and posteriorly tilt while staying down away from your ears.
– Finish with biceps near your ears and arms in line with your torso, keeping the trunk rigid like a plank.
– Lower with control along the same path, keeping elbows straight and the torso steady.
– Breathe continuously and avoid rib flare or lumbar arching to reach overhead.
– Avoid bending the elbows, shrugging the shoulders, gripping too hard, or letting the hips sag or pike.

Suspender Y Raise Beginner Introduction

The Suspender Y Raise is a bodyweight exercise performed on a suspension trainer that combines a plank position with an overhead arm motion. The body stays in a long, rigid line while the arms travel upward into a wide “Y” shape slightly in front of the torso. This coordinated movement trains how the shoulder blades and upper arms move together, rather than isolating just one joint or muscle group.

This drill highlights the mid and lower areas of the traps, along with muscles around the ribs and the smaller stabilizers of the shoulders. Straight elbows and thumbs pointing upward encourage smooth overhead motion and centered, controlled shoulders. Because the trunk remains braced and aligned, the movement emphasizes postural control and overhead reach without relying on arching through the lower back. It suits sessions where shoulder health, upper back engagement, and precise control of the shoulder blades are priorities, especially in athletes and lifters who use suspension training.
