Planche Press

Planche Press Exercise Description

The Planche Press is an advanced bodyweight gymnastics skill that transitions from a planche (or planche lean) to a handstand without bending the elbows. It builds straight‑arm shoulder flexion strength, scapular control, and whole‑body tension. Primary contributors include the anterior deltoids, pectoralis major, triceps brachii, and serratus anterior, with strong isometric support from the abdominals, hip flexors, glutes, and the forearm musculature stabilizing the wrists. The hallmark is a hollow body position with consistent scapular protraction and depression, plus a controlled forward lean to keep the center of mass balanced over the hands. The movement emphasizes “pushing the floor away” to elevate the shoulders while lifting the hips through trunk compression, finishing in a stacked, active handstand. It’s a technique‑driven press that rewards precision and balance over momentum.

How To Do The Planche Press Exercise

‘- Place hands shoulder-width, fingers spread, index fingers forward; grip the floor and lock the elbows.
– Protract and depress the scapulae; set a hollow body (ribs down, slight posterior pelvic tilt); gaze between the thumbs.
– Start in a planche lean or straddle planche; shift shoulders slightly forward so they’re over or just ahead of the wrists.
– Drive the floor away to keep elbows straight and shoulders elevated as you compress (pike/straddle) at the hips.
– Lighten the feet and lift them without jumping; maintain strong protraction throughout.
– As hips rise, bring shoulders back over the hands while keeping legs straddled or piked to manage leverage.
– Finish in a straight, stacked handstand: wrists–shoulders–hips–ankles aligned, glutes lightly engaged, neutral head.
– Reverse with control to return to the planche/lean, maintaining hollow tension and straight elbows.

Planche Press Tips

‘- Set your hands shoulder-width with fingers spread, index fingers pointing forward, and actively grip the floor.
– Lock your elbows from the start and focus on keeping them straight throughout the press and return.
– Protract and depress your scapulae and keep them there to maintain shoulder elevation and stability.
– Hold a hollow body by keeping ribs down and a slight posterior pelvic tilt as you move.
– Keep your gaze between your thumbs to help maintain consistent head and spine position.
– Lean the shoulders slightly over or just ahead of the wrists to balance your center of mass over your hands.
– “Drive the floor away” to elevate the shoulders as you compress at the hips into a pike or straddle.
– Lift the feet by lightening them and raising them without jumping, maintaining strong scapular protraction.
– In the handstand, align wrists, shoulders, hips, and ankles in a straight line with lightly engaged glutes and a neutral head.

Planche Press Beginner Introduction

The Planche Press is a high-level bodyweight gymnastics move that links a planche-style position into a controlled handstand while the arms stay straight. Instead of using momentum or bending at the elbows, the body rises through powerful pushing from the shoulders and chest, supported by strong triceps and the muscles around the rib cage. Throughout the motion, the abs, hip flexors, glutes, and forearms stay tense to hold a rigid, “hollowed” shape as the body leans forward and then inverts over the hands.

This press is all about precision, balance, and body awareness. The shoulders remain actively lifted, the shoulder blades stay engaged around the ribcage, and the hips fold and unfold in a smooth arc to shift the body from a low, forward-leaning position into a tall, aligned handstand. Because so much of the challenge comes from timing and exact positioning, it is often treated as a technical strength skill rather than a simple power exercise, rewarding careful control and consistency.
