Dumbbell Arnold Press
Dumbbell Arnold Press Exercise Description
The Dumbbell Arnold Press is a vertical pressing variation that combines shoulder flexion/abduction with forearm rotation. It primarily targets the anterior and lateral deltoid, with assistance from the triceps brachii. The rotator cuff and scapular stabilizers (serratus anterior and trapezius) work to maintain glenohumeral alignment and promote smooth scapular upward rotation. Rotating the dumbbells from a palms-in start to a palms-forward finish encourages a long, controlled range of motion while keeping the elbows in front of the torso. Performed seated or standing, the movement emphasizes stacked posture—neutral spine, braced trunk, and ribs aligned over the pelvis—to minimize lumbar extension and keep the load over the shoulders. Use a controlled path slightly in front of the body (scapular plane) and avoid shrugging so the deltoids drive the press while the shoulder girdle stays stable.

How To Do The Dumbbell Arnold Press Exercise
‘- Sit tall on an upright bench or stand with feet hip-width; maintain a neutral spine and level pelvis.
– Hold dumbbells at upper-chest/shoulder height in front of you; palms face you, elbows forward and close to the ribs, forearms vertical, wrists straight.
– Set shoulders “down and back” lightly, then brace the midsection and keep the chin tucked.
– Press the dumbbells upward while simultaneously rotating the forearms so the palms turn forward as they pass your face.
– Press in the scapular plane (slightly in front of the shoulders); avoid leaning back or flaring the ribs.
– Finish with the dumbbells stacked over the shoulders/midfoot, elbows extended without hyperextending, biceps near the ears, shoulders depressed.
– Lower under control, rotating the palms back toward you as the elbows track in front of the torso.
– Stop the descent around chin to upper-chest level; do not let the elbows drift behind the body.
– Keep wrists neutral and forearms under the dumbbells throughout; avoid “banging” the weights.
– Exhale as you press; inhale on the way down.
– If any position provokes shoulder discomfort, shorten the range to a comfortable, controlled arc.
Dumbbell Arnold Press Tips
‘- Sit or stand tall with a neutral spine and level pelvis, keeping ribs aligned over the pelvis to avoid leaning back.
– Start with dumbbells at upper-chest/shoulder height, palms facing you, elbows forward and close to the ribs, forearms vertical.
– Lightly set the shoulders “down and back” and keep them depressed throughout so you don’t shrug as you press.
– Brace your midsection and keep your chin tucked to support a stacked posture.
– Press the dumbbells slightly in front of the shoulders (scapular plane), avoiding leaning back or flaring the ribs.
– Rotate the forearms as you press so the palms turn from facing you to facing forward as the dumbbells pass your face.
– Finish with the dumbbells stacked over the shoulders/midfoot, elbows extended but not hyperextended, and biceps near the ears.
– Lower the dumbbells under control, rotating the palms back toward you while keeping the elbows tracking in front of the torso; do not let the elbows drift behind the body.
– Keep wrists neutral and forearms under the dumbbells at all times, moving smoothly and avoiding “banging” the weights.
Dumbbell Arnold Press Beginner Introduction
The Dumbbell Arnold Press is an overhead pressing exercise that blends a shoulder press with a twisting motion of the forearms. It can be performed while seated on a bench or in a standing position and centers on strong, upright posture so the weight stays aligned over the shoulders rather than shifting into the lower back. As the dumbbells travel upward, the hands gradually rotate, creating a smooth, arcing motion instead of a straight up-and-down path.
This movement mainly challenges the front and outer portions of the shoulders, with support from the triceps. Smaller muscles around the shoulder blades and the back of the shoulder joint contribute by steadying the upper body and guiding the shoulder blades as the arms rise and lower. The controlled tempo and deliberate path place a spotlight on stability, body awareness, and coordination between the arms, shoulders, and torso, making this press a focused way to train the upper body with free weights.
