Criss Cross Arms Lift

Criss Cross Arms Lift Exercise Description

Criss Cross Arms Lift is a bodyweight chest drill that emphasizes horizontal adduction of the shoulder to target the pectoralis major. Performed standing, you sweep the arms from a wide “T” into a controlled cross-over in front of the sternum, then gently lift the crossed forearms to shoulder height without shrugging. The anterior deltoid assists with the lift, while the serratus anterior and rotator cuff help guide and stabilize the shoulder blades. Focus is on smooth scapular motion, neutral spine, and even pressure from both arms as they cross. This is a low-load patterning movement that builds awareness of chest engagement and shoulder positioning using only your body weight.

How To Do The Criss Cross Arms Lift Exercise

‘- Stand tall with feet hip-width, ribs stacked over pelvis, neck long, and shoulder blades gently down and back.
– Raise arms to shoulder height in a wide “T,” elbows softly bent, palms facing forward.
– Exhale as you sweep the arms forward in a wide arc, bringing the upper arms across the chest to form an “X” (alternate which arm is on top each rep).
– At the crossover, gently squeeze the upper arms toward midline and lift the crossed forearms to shoulder height without shrugging; keep elbows slightly bent.
– Inhale as you reverse the path, opening back to the “T” under control; avoid arching the lower back or flaring the ribs.
– Keep wrists neutral, chin tucked slightly, and shoulders away from ears throughout.
– Move smoothly; stop short of any pinching or pain at the front of the shoulder.

– As you exhale, sweep the arms forward in a wide arc, focusing on bringing the upper arms across the chest to form a clear “X.”
– Alternate which arm crosses on top each rep to keep pressure even between sides.
– At the crossover, gently squeeze the upper arms toward the midline to emphasize chest engagement.
– Lift the crossed forearms only to shoulder height and avoid shrugging as you do so.

Criss Cross Arms Lift Beginner Introduction

Criss Cross Arms Lift is a standing, bodyweight chest drill that highlights how the arms travel across the front of the body to activate the chest. The movement brings the arms from a wide, open position at shoulder level into a gentle cross in front, then raises the forearms while the shoulders stay relaxed. This coordinated action draws attention to the chest/pecs, with support from the front of the shoulders, muscles along the sides of the ribs, and the small stabilizers around the shoulder joint.

Because the motion is light and controlled, it works well as a technique-focused pattern rather than a strength-maximizing exercise. The emphasis sits on smooth movement of the shoulder blades, an upright, natural back position, and a balanced contribution from both arms as they cross. Over time, this helps build a clearer sense of how the chest engages, how the shoulders sit and glide, and how the upper body can move together as one connected unit.
