Cable Side Crunch

Cable Side Crunch Exercise Description

Cable Side Crunch trains trunk lateral flexion in the frontal plane using constant cable resistance. The primary movers are the internal and external obliques, with assistance from the quadratus lumborum; the rectus abdominis and transverse abdominis contribute to trunk bracing and control. Compared with bodyweight side bends, the cable allows precise line of pull and smooth resistance through the range of motion. The goal is to shorten the distance between the lower ribs and the pelvis on one side without twisting or hinging at the hips. Keep the neck neutral and pelvis level to emphasize the obliques rather than compensating with momentum or hip hike. Move within a controlled, comfortable range and emphasize the eccentric return for stability and trunk control.

How To Do The Cable Side Crunch Exercise

‘- Attach a rope to a high pulley. Kneel side-on to the machine (working side closest), knees under hips, torso tall.
– Lightly hold each rope end near the side of your head/temple on the working side. Elbows close; do not pull with the arms.
– Set shoulders down and back. Stack ribs over pelvis. Brace the abdominal wall.
– Initiate by bringing the ribcage toward the same-side hip (pure lateral flexion). Keep hips square and level; avoid rotation or forward flexion.
– Pause briefly at the end position while maintaining a neutral neck (gaze forward).
– Control the eccentric: resist the cable as you return to an upright, stacked torso.
– Keep the opposite side long; avoid hiking the working-side hip or shifting the pelvis.
– Breathe: exhale as you side-crunch; inhale on the controlled return.
– Reset posture and repeat all cues for the other side.

Cable Side Crunch Tips

‘- Set up kneeling side-on to the machine with knees under hips and torso tall before starting each set.
– Lightly hold the rope near your temple on the working side and keep elbows close so you don’t pull with your arms.
– Stack ribs directly over pelvis and brace the abdominal wall before initiating each rep.
– Focus on bringing the lower ribs toward the same-side hip in pure lateral flexion, without twisting or hinging at the hips.
– Keep hips square and level and avoid hiking the working-side hip or shifting the pelvis.
– Maintain a neutral neck with your gaze forward, especially at the end of the side crunch.
– Move within a controlled, comfortable range and pause briefly at the end position.
– Emphasize the eccentric by resisting the cable as you return to an upright, stacked torso.
– Coordinate breathing: exhale as you side-crunch, inhale during the controlled return.

Cable Side Crunch Beginner Introduction

Cable Side Crunch is a cable-machine core exercise that highlights controlled side bending of the torso. Using a rope on a high pulley, the movement centers on bringing one side of the ribcage closer to the same-side hip while the hips remain steady. This emphasizes the side abs and side lower back, with the abs and deep core helping to steady the trunk. Compared with unweighted side bends, the cable offers steady tension and a consistent path of resistance, helping the working side stay engaged through the entire motion.

The exercise theme is precision rather than swinging or twisting. A tall, aligned torso with ribs balanced over the pelvis, level hips, and a relaxed, neutral neck allows the side muscles to handle the effort instead of the arms or hips taking over. The return phase against the pull of the cable is gradual and deliberate, which further challenges stability and control around the mid-section. Breathing rhythm also plays a role, supporting smooth, steady motion as the torso moves in and out of the side-crunch position.
