Cable Seated Front Press

Cable Seated Front Press Exercise Description

The Cable Seated Front Press is a vertical pressing exercise performed on a dual adjustable pulley while seated with back support. It targets the deltoids—especially the anterior and middle fibers—while the triceps extend the elbows. The upper trapezius and serratus anterior contribute to scapular upward rotation, and the rotator cuff stabilizes the glenohumeral joint throughout the press. Cables provide consistent tension and allow independent arm paths, encouraging a controlled press in the scapular plane (elbows slightly in front of the shoulders) rather than flared directly to the side. The seated position minimizes lower-body assistance and helps maintain a neutral spine as you press the handles overhead in front of the head.

How To Do The Cable Seated Front Press Exercise

‘- Position a bench with back support centered between two cable stacks; attach D-handles set near shoulder height when seated.
– Sit tall with feet flat and hips/back supported; ribs down, spine neutral, light chin tuck.
– Grasp the handles with palms forward (or neutral), hands just outside shoulder width; forearms vertical and wrists neutral.
– Start with elbows slightly in front of shoulders (scapular plane), wrists stacked over elbows; avoid excessive lumbar arch.
– Brace; press the handles upward and slightly back so they finish over the shoulder line, keeping elbows under wrists.
– Reach near full elbow extension without hyperextending; biceps close to ears without forcefully shrugging.
– Lower under control until handles are around chin–ear level (or upper arms about parallel to the floor), maintaining neutral wrists.
– Keep ribcage down and pelvis neutral; if the low back starts to arch, limit range to what you can control while staying tall.
– Maintain smooth, controlled motion and steady breathing; keep head and neck neutral throughout.

Cable Seated Front Press Tips

‘- Sit tall with hips and back supported, feet flat, ribs down, and a light chin tuck.
– Set the handles near shoulder height so your forearms are vertical when seated.
– Grip the handles just outside shoulder width with neutral wrists and palms forward or neutral.
– Keep elbows slightly in front of the shoulders in the scapular plane, not flared directly to the side.
– Start with wrists stacked directly over elbows and avoid excessive arching of the lower back.
– Press the handles upward and slightly back so they finish over the shoulder line, keeping elbows under wrists.
– Reach close to full elbow extension but stop before hyperextending the elbows.
– Bring biceps close to your ears without forcefully shrugging the shoulders.
– Lower the handles under control to about chin–ear level or until upper arms are roughly parallel to the floor, maintaining neutral wrists.
– Keep the ribcage down, pelvis neutral, and head and neck in a neutral position throughout the movement.

Cable Seated Front Press Beginner Introduction

The Cable Seated Front Press is a seated cable overhead movement that uses a dual adjustable pulley and a supportive bench. Because the lifter is resting against a back pad instead of standing, the effort centers on the upper body rather than on driving through the legs. The cables place steady resistance on the arms through the whole path, and each side moves on its own line, highlighting any strength or control differences between left and right.

This press mainly challenges the shoulders, especially the front and middle areas, while the triceps assist as the elbows straighten. Muscles around the upper traps, rib cage, and rotator cuff help guide the shoulder blades and keep the shoulder joint steady as the handles travel upward and slightly in front of the head. The arm path sits a bit forward of the torso instead of directly out to the sides, promoting a strong, controlled press with an upright, organized posture throughout the motion.
