Finger Curls

Finger Curls Exercise Description

Barbell Finger Curls target the finger flexors of the forearm to develop the “crushing” component of grip. The primary movers are the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor digitorum superficialis, with assistance from other forearm flexors; the wrist stays neutral and still while the fingers move. Supporting the forearms on your thighs or a bench limits trunk and shoulder involvement, helping you focus on a full, controlled finger range of motion. The goal is to let the bar roll to the fingertips under control, then actively flex the fingers to draw it back into the palm without turning it into a wrist curl. Prioritize smooth, pain-free motion and precise control to reduce unnecessary stress on the small finger joints.

How To Do The Finger Curls Exercise

‘- Sit on a bench with feet flat. Rest your forearms on your thighs (or a bench), palms up, wrists just beyond the edge for clearance.
– Take a closed, supinated grip on the barbell about shoulder-width, thumbs wrapped. Keep elbows relaxed and still.
– Set a neutral wrist (straight—no bending). Shoulders down; avoid shrugging.
– Start with the bar resting in your palms. Slowly extend your fingers, allowing the bar to roll to the pads of your fingertips while the wrist remains still.
– Flex only your fingers to curl the bar back into your palms. Lightly squeeze at the top; do not bend at the wrist.
– Move smoothly through a comfortable, controlled range—no dropping or bouncing the bar.
– Keep forearms anchored throughout; avoid lifting the elbows or rocking the torso.
– To finish, curl the bar securely into your palms before placing it back on your thighs or a rack.

Finger Curls Tips

‘- Rest your forearms fully on your thighs or a bench with palms up and wrists just beyond the edge for clearance.
– Use a closed, supinated grip about shoulder-width with your thumbs wrapped around the bar.
– Keep your wrists neutral and straight; avoid any bending so the wrist stays still.
– Let the bar roll slowly from your palms to the pads of your fingertips while keeping the wrist motionless.
– Flex only your fingers to curl the bar back into your palms, then add a light squeeze at the top without turning it into a wrist curl.
– Keep your shoulders down and avoid shrugging while you perform the movement.
– Anchor your forearms and keep your elbows relaxed and still; do not lift the elbows or rock the torso.
– Move through a comfortable, pain-free, controlled range—no dropping or bouncing the bar.
– At the end of the set, curl the bar securely into your palms before placing it back on your thighs or a rack.

Finger Curls Beginner Introduction

Barbell Finger Curls are a barbell-based grip exercise that highlights the finger-flexing muscles in the forearms, building stronger “crushing” strength in the hands. The lifter is seated with the forearms resting along the thighs or a bench, so the upper body and shoulders contribute as little as possible. This support helps direct the work into the lower arms while the barbell sits across the hands with the palms turned upward.

During the movement, the wrists stay straight and quiet while only the fingers open and close. The barbell gently glides from the palm toward the fingertips, then is drawn back into the hand through a deliberate curling motion of the fingers, rather than a wrist curl. The range of motion stays smooth and comfortable, with no sudden drops or bouncing of the weight, which helps lower unnecessary strain on the small finger joints. Overall, this creates a controlled way to challenge grip strength and forearm endurance using simple barbell equipment.
