Cable Deadlift Exercise Description

The cable deadlift is a hip-hinge exercise that loads the posterior chain using a low pulley. It primarily targets the gluteus maximus and hamstrings, with the spinal erectors providing trunk stiffness and the lats helping keep the handle close. Compared with a free-weight deadlift, the forward line of pull from the cable encourages constant tension and reinforces staying balanced over the midfoot. The movement pattern is hinge-dominant—not a squat—so the hips travel back while the shins stay relatively vertical. Proper bracing and a neutral spine are emphasized throughout to control the pelvis and protect position under load.

How To Do The Cable Deadlift Exercise

‘- Set a straight bar on the lowest pulley. Stand facing the stack with feet about hip-width and the cable centered between your feet.
– Grip the bar just outside your thighs, palms down. Create light tension by stepping back so the cable stays taut.
– Brace 360° (ribs stacked over pelvis). Depress and lightly retract the shoulder blades; keep the bar close.
– Hinge at the hips: push your hips back, allow a slight knee bend, keep shins nearly vertical, and maintain a neutral spine and neck.
– Drive the floor away and extend your hips to stand tall. Keep the bar traveling close to your legs; do not pull with the arms.
– Finish with hips and knees extended, torso tall, and glutes engaged—avoid hyperextending the low back or forcefully locking the knees.
– Reverse by sending the hips back again, lowering the bar along your thighs/shins until you feel hamstring tension while maintaining spinal neutrality.
– Keep continuous cable tension; avoid letting the stack touch down between reps.
– Common form checks: hinge (don’t squat), bar close to your body, lats on, core braced, and heels and midfoot rooted.

– At the top, finish with hips and knees just fully extended and glutes engaged, without arching your low back past neutral.

– Keep your weight balanced over your midfoot, rooting your heels and midfoot into the floor.

Cable Deadlift Beginner Introduction

The cable deadlift uses a low pulley and straight bar to train a hip-hinge pattern with the resistance pulling slightly forward from in front of the body. Instead of a squatting motion, the movement centers on the hips gliding backward while the torso inclines and the knees bend only a little. This places the workload mainly on the glutes and hamstrings, with strong assistance from the back and the muscles around the midsection that stabilize the spine. The back muscles along the sides of the ribs also contribute by holding the bar close to the legs.

Because the cable pulls forward throughout the range of motion, the legs and hips experience a steady challenge, and balance tends to stay organized over the middle of the foot rather than shifting excessively toward the toes or heels.
