Teaser

Teaser Exercise Description

The Teaser is a classic Pilates mat exercise that integrates trunk flexion, hip flexion, and balance. It primarily trains the anterior core—rectus abdominis, obliques, and transverse abdominis—along with the hip flexors, while the spinal erectors and scapular stabilizers assist in control. The movement articulates the spine from the mat into a stable V-sit and returns with the legs and torso moving together under control. Key technique points include a smooth posterior pelvic tilt, ribs stacked over the pelvis, a long neutral neck, and quiet shoulders. Performed slowly with coordinated breathing, it challenges lumbo‑pelvic control and body awareness without momentum. Balance occurs on the sit bones with the thighs lifted roughly 45 degrees, arms parallel to the legs, and the abdomen braced to avoid lumbar collapse. This version starts supine and lifts both the head-and-shoulders and legs simultaneously, emphasizing smooth sequencing through the thoracic and lumbar spine rather than hinging abruptly at the hips.

How To Do The Teaser Exercise

‘- Lie supine with legs together; bend hips and knees to tabletop; arms long by sides, palms down.
– Gently brace the abdominal wall; keep ribs dropped and shoulders depressed; eyes toward knees to set a neutral neck.
– Inhale to prepare; exhale, nod the chin, and curl the upper spine off the mat as the pelvis posteriorly tilts.
– Simultaneously float both legs to about 45 degrees; if control allows, extend the knees; reach arms parallel to the shins.
– Roll up through the spine to balance on the sit bones; torso and thighs form a V; keep the chest lifted and shoulder blades down.
– Inhale to lengthen; exhale and reverse-sequence to the mat—first roll the pelvis under, then lower the spine and legs together with steady control.
– Keep movement smooth and quiet; avoid gripping the neck or hip flexors, thrusting the ribs, or collapsing through the low back. If needed, lower the leg angle or keep knees bent.

Teaser Tips

‘- Gently brace the abdominal wall before you start and keep it engaged to avoid lumbar collapse.
– Keep ribs dropped and stacked over the pelvis as you curl and balance.
– Nod the chin and keep the eyes toward the knees to maintain a long, neutral neck.
– Use a smooth posterior pelvic tilt as you curl the upper spine off the mat.
– Float both legs to roughly 45 degrees and extend the knees only if you can maintain control.
– Reach the arms parallel to the shins/legs in the V position and keep the chest lifted.
– Balance on the sit bones with torso and thighs forming a stable V shape.
– Keep shoulders depressed and “quiet,” with the shoulder blades down throughout.
– Roll and unroll through the spine segment by segment rather than hinging abruptly at the hips.
– Perform the movement slowly with coordinated breathing, keeping it smooth and quiet and without momentum.

Teaser Beginner Introduction

The Teaser is a well-known Pilates mat movement that blends controlled curling of the torso, lifting of the legs, and steady balancing into one flowing sequence. Starting from a lying position, the upper body and legs rise together into a V-shaped hold, with the body resting on the sitting bones and the arms reaching in line with the thighs. The spine gradually rounds off the mat and then lengthens back down in the same smooth order, so the motion feels like a rolling wave rather than a sharp bend at the hips.

This exercise centers on the front of the torso, working the abs and side abs, while the hip flexors help support the lifted legs. Muscles along the spine, as well as the shoulders and upper back, contribute to control and stability. The movement is typically done at a calm, deliberate pace with synchronized breathing, which highlights control through the lower back and pelvis and enhances overall body awareness.
