Dumbbell Cossack Squats

Dumbbell Cossack Squats Exercise Description

The Dumbbell Cossack Squat is a lateral squat variation performed with a goblet-held dumbbell. It primarily trains the working leg’s quadriceps and gluteus maximus, with important contributions from the adductors and calves; the hamstrings assist as hip stabilizers. The non-working leg remains long, creating a noticeable adductor stretch while you control depth on the loaded side. Throughout the movement, the trunk braces to maintain a neutral spine and the knee tracks over the midfoot. This pattern develops frontal-plane control and side-to-side strength while reinforcing solid foot pressure and upright posture.

How To Do The Dumbbell Cossack Squats Exercise

‘- Hold a dumbbell vertically at chest height (goblet), elbows under the bell; retract and depress the shoulder blades.
– Stand wider than shoulder-width; toes slightly turned out as comfortable. Establish a tripod foot (heel, big toe, little toe).
– Inhale and brace. Keep ribs stacked over pelvis and a neutral spine.
– Shift hips toward the working side; sit back and down over that heel.
– Keep the working knee tracking in line with the second–third toe; heel stays on the floor.
– Keep the non-working leg straight with heel on the floor and toes pointed up.
– Descend only as far as you can while keeping the heel down and spine neutral.
– Keep the dumbbell close to the chest; chest tall, gaze forward.
– Drive through the whole foot to return to center, then stand tall.
– Reset your brace and repeat to the opposite side.
– Avoid knee cave, bouncing at the bottom, or twisting the pelvis.

Dumbbell Cossack Squats Beginner Introduction

The Dumbbell Cossack Squat is a side-to-side squat pattern that uses a single weight held close to the chest. One leg carries most of the load as it bends, while the opposite leg stretches out straight with the heel down and toes lifted. This creates a strong inner-thigh stretch on the extended side as the working leg’s thighs and glutes handle the effort, with help from the calves and the back of the thighs. The chest-held dumbbell adds challenge while also encouraging an upright, balanced stance.

Throughout the motion, the midsection stays firm and the back organized, so the torso doesn’t collapse or round. The working knee moves in line with the middle of the foot, and pressure spreads across the heel and forefoot rather than shifting to the toes. Because the movement travels laterally instead of straight up and down, it emphasizes side-to-side strength, balance, and coordination. This makes it a useful option for building control in wide stances and improving confidence when shifting weight from one leg to the other.
