Single Leg Platform Slide

Single Leg Platform Slide Exercise Description

The Single Leg Platform Slide is a unilateral lower-body exercise performed with a slider or towel under one foot. It emphasizes the stance leg’s quadriceps and gluteus maximus while the gluteus medius and other hip stabilizers maintain pelvic control. The sliding leg moves laterally, challenging the adductors and coordination in the frontal plane. This drill reinforces balance, hip-knee-ankle alignment, and controlled depth with a neutral spine. It is useful for practicing smooth weight transfer and building body control using only bodyweight and a low-friction surface.

How To Do The Single Leg Platform Slide Exercise

‘- Stand tall with feet hip-width and parallel. Place a slider under one foot; keep most of your weight over the opposite (standing) leg.
– Stack ribs over pelvis, brace lightly, and set a neutral spine. Raise arms in front for counterbalance if helpful.
– Create a tripod on the standing foot (big toe, little toe, heel). Keep that heel down throughout.
– Initiate with a hip hinge: sit the hips back and bend the standing knee as the slider foot glides smoothly out to the side.
– Keep the sliding leg mostly straight with a soft knee; apply only light pressure to the slider.
– Track the standing knee over the second–third toe; avoid the knee collapsing inward. Maintain even foot pressure and a level pelvis.
– Control torso angle—tall through the chest without rounding or side-bending.
– Slide only to a range where you can keep alignment, balance, and the foot arch. Pause briefly at your lowest controlled position.
– Return by pressing through the whole foot of the standing leg and simultaneously “pulling” the slider in using the inner thigh of the sliding leg.
– Finish tall with hips and ribs stacked. Reset and repeat on the other side with the same controlled tempo.

Single Leg Platform Slide Tips

‘- Keep most of your weight over the standing leg from start to finish.
– Stack ribs over pelvis and maintain a neutral spine as you move.
– Use your arms in front as a counterbalance if it helps you stay stable.
– Create a tripod with the standing foot and keep that heel down the whole time.
– Initiate the movement with a hip hinge—sit your hips back as you bend the standing knee.
– Keep the sliding leg mostly straight with a soft knee and only light pressure on the slider.
– Track the standing knee over the second–third toe and avoid it collapsing inward.
– Maintain a level pelvis and tall chest without rounding or side-bending.
– Slide only as far as you can while keeping alignment, balance, and the foot arch, then pause briefly.
– Return by pressing through the whole standing foot while “pulling” the slider in with the inner thigh of the sliding leg.

Single Leg Platform Slide Beginner Introduction

The Single Leg Platform Slide is a single-leg lower body movement that uses a slider or towel under one foot on a smooth surface. One leg carries most of the load while the other foot glides out to the side, creating a controlled side-to-side motion. This setup highlights bodyweight training with minimal equipment and places attention on smooth shifting of pressure between the legs.

The working leg takes on the main effort through the quads and glutes, while the outer hip muscles contribute to steady, centered hips. As the moving leg travels outward and then returns, the inner thigh contributes to drawing it back in, building coordination between both legs. Throughout the pattern, the drill encourages balance, a steady posture, and a clear line through the hip, knee, and ankle of the standing leg. The movement centers on deliberate depth rather than speed, reinforcing control, stability, and awareness of how the lower body moves as a unit.
