Quadruped Shoulder CARs (Controlled Articular Rotations) are a slow, active shoulder mobility drill performed on hands and knees. The goal is to explore your available, pain‑free range while maintaining trunk stability and precise control of the shoulder blade and humerus. You’ll move the arm in a large, deliberate circle that passes through flexion, abduction, and extension while coordinating internal and external rotation. Primary drivers are the rotator cuff and deltoid, with the serratus anterior, trapezius, and rhomboids stabilizing the scapula; the core and hips maintain a neutral spine. This drill is useful for movement prep and for assessing how the shoulder moves under control without compensations.

How To Do The Quadruped Shoulder Cars Exercise
‘- Start on hands and knees: wrists under shoulders, knees under hips, neutral spine, ribs down, neck long.
– Spread fingers and create light shoulder tension; keep the supporting arm straight and shoulder away from the ear.
– Shift weight slightly to the support side without rotating the pelvis or ribcage.
– Lift the free hand a few centimeters off the floor with a straight elbow and long fingers; keep the arm active, not floppy.
– Begin the circle: raise the arm into flexion (forward/overhead) as far as comfortable, keeping the torso still.
– At the top, externally rotate (biceps turns outward), then continue outward to abduction.
– As the arm travels behind into extension, gradually internally rotate (biceps turns inward) to maintain clearance.
– Keep space between shoulder and ear; allow controlled scapular motion without shrugging or trunk sway.
– Reverse the path smoothly to return, rotating the humerus in the opposite sequence.
– Move slowly, stay pain‑free, and perform the same controlled pattern in both directions on the other side.

The movement centers on drawing a large, smooth circle with one arm while the rest of the body stays steady and quiet. As the arm travels through the front, side, and back of the body, the upper arm also gently rotates, giving the shoulder joint a chance to move through a broad, comfortable range. This creates a strong mind–muscle connection around the shoulders and nearby muscles of the chest and upper back.
Because the torso and hips are meant to remain stable, the core and hips play an important supporting role, helping the back stay in its natural alignment. Around the moving shoulder, the smaller stabilizers of the joint, the shoulders themselves, and the muscles around the shoulder blade all share the workload. This controlled, thoughtful pattern is often used before training sessions or as a way to check how the shoulder is moving under control without extra twisting or compensations from the rest of the body.
