Single Starfish Crunch

Single Starfish Crunch Exercise Description

The Single Starfish Crunch is a floor-based abdominal exercise performed from a wide “starfish” position—arms and legs spread—lifting one leg and the opposite shoulder girdle at a time. It emphasizes trunk flexion with a diagonal reach, targeting the rectus abdominis while the external and internal obliques guide the cross‑body motion. The hip flexors assist to raise the leg, and the transverse abdominis contributes to bracing and spinal control. Because only one side moves per rep, it promotes coordination and control without excessive momentum. Keep the movement small and precise, maintaining a lightly posteriorly tilted pelvis to avoid lumbar extension as you reach.

How To Do The Single Starfish Crunch Exercise

‘- Lie supine with arms overhead at about 45 degrees and legs spread wider than hips; toes up, knees comfortably extended.
– Set a light posterior pelvic tilt so the low back gently contacts the floor; brace the abdominal wall.
– Keep a neutral neck with a soft chin tuck and eyes toward the ceiling.
– Exhale, lift the right leg and left shoulder blade off the floor, and reach the left hand diagonally toward the outside of the right shin/ankle.
– Drive the motion from trunk flexion; avoid pulling on the neck or swinging the leg.
– Keep the nonworking arm and leg long and quiet on the floor.
– Pause briefly when the shoulder blades clear the floor and you feel abdominal tension—touch is optional.
– Inhale and lower the torso and leg with control, maintaining the pelvic position.
– Repeat to the opposite side, alternating reps.
– Common form checks: ribs down (no flaring), smooth breathing, slow lowers, and only as high as you can without the low back arching.

– Inhale as you lower the torso and leg with control, maintaining your pelvic position, and alternate sides with smooth breathing and slow lowers.

Single Starfish Crunch Beginner Introduction

The Single Starfish Crunch is a floor core exercise that starts from a wide, spread-out “star” shape, with the arms and legs reaching away from the center of the body. From this position, one leg and the opposite side of the upper body rise together in a cross-body motion, creating a diagonal reach that brings the lower and upper halves toward each other. This movement pattern highlights the abs while the side abs guide the twist, with support from the deep core and hip flexors as the leg lifts.

Because only one side works at a time, the exercise naturally emphasizes coordination, rhythm, and smooth control instead of speed or swinging. The motion stays compact and intentional, encouraging careful positioning of the hips and lower back so the spine remains supported as the body curls. Breathing stays integrated with each repetition, helping the torso stay steady while the arms and legs alternately move, building awareness of how the whole midsection works together.
