Palms Above Head Elbow Squeeze

Palms Above Head Elbow Squeeze Exercise Description

The Palms Above Head Elbow Squeeze is an isometric chest-focused drill performed with an EZ bar held overhead. You maintain the bar in a stable overhead position while actively “squeezing” the elbows toward the midline, creating inward adduction torque to recruit the pectoralis major without moving the bar. The anterior deltoid and triceps stabilize the shoulder and elbow, while the serratus anterior and trapezius assist with scapular upward rotation to keep the bar stacked over the midfoot. The goal is crisp torso alignment (neutral spine, ribs down) and steady shoulder positioning as you generate controlled chest tension. Performed with smooth breathing and precise bracing, it builds upper-body tension and awareness without pressing the bar.

How To Do The Palms Above Head Elbow Squeeze Exercise

‘- Stand tall with feet about hip-width. Brace lightly and set a neutral spine, ribs down, chin tucked.
– Grip the EZ bar on the inner bends about shoulder-width; palms face slightly inward with wrists neutral.
– Press the bar overhead until it’s in line with (or slightly behind) the ears; stack bar–wrist–elbow–shoulder over the midfoot.
– Set the shoulders: upwardly rotate without shrugging; think “reach the bar up” while keeping neck long.
– Keep a slight bend in the elbows. Do not lock out hard.
– Create tension by trying to draw your elbows toward each other (inward adduction torque) without letting your hands move on the bar.
– Maintain even pressure from both hands; keep forearms vertical and the bar path fixed.
– Breathe behind the brace. Avoid flaring the ribcage or arching the lower back.
– Keep wrists straight, avoid letting the bar drift forward, and stop if you feel pinching in the shoulders.
– Lower the bar under control to the shoulders, then to the rack or floor.

– Maintain even pressure from both hands so your forearms stay vertical and the bar position stays fixed.

– Breathe smoothly behind your brace, avoiding ribcage flare or lower-back arching.
– Keep wrists straight throughout, and stop if you feel pinching in the shoulders, lowering the bar under control.

Palms Above Head Elbow Squeeze Beginner Introduction

The Palms Above Head Elbow Squeeze is a static chest exercise that uses an EZ bar in an overhead position to build controlled upper-body tension. Instead of moving the bar up and down, the lifter holds it steady above the head and creates an inward pulling effort through the elbows, which challenges the chest while the bar remains still. This turns the movement into a tension drill rather than a traditional press, with the bar acting as a tool to connect arm position, chest engagement, and whole-body steadiness.

The main work is felt through the chest, with the front shoulders and triceps helping to hold the bar in place. Muscles around the shoulder blades and along the ribcage contribute to keeping the bar centered over the feet. The midsection stays engaged to support a long, organized torso and calm breathing pattern. Because the arms stay overhead while the chest works isometrically, the drill emphasizes posture, shoulder control, and precise muscle activation, making it useful for learning how to generate strong, even tension without relying on movement or momentum.
