Suspension Side Bridge

Suspension Side Bridge Exercise Description

The Suspension Side Bridge is a side-plank variation performed with the feet in suspension straps. It trains anti-lateral flexion and anti-rotation by asking the trunk to resist bending and twisting while the body is held in a straight line. Primary muscles include the external and internal obliques and quadratus lumborum, with assistance from the gluteus medius/minimus and lateral shoulder stabilizers (serratus anterior and rotator cuff). The suspended foot position increases instability, which raises the demand on lumbopelvic control and scapular stability. This drill emphasizes a neutral spine, stacked ribs and pelvis, and even hip height, promoting precise alignment and efficient force transfer through the kinetic chain.

How To Do The Suspension Side Bridge Exercise

‘- Position yourself perpendicular to the anchor and place both feet in the foot cradles; stack the feet (or stagger for more base of support).
– Lie on your side with your bottom elbow directly under your shoulder; forearm flat on the floor.
– Stack shoulders and hips; align head, ribcage, and pelvis so your spine is neutral.
– “Press the floor away” with the forearm to depress and protract the shoulder blade; avoid sinking into the shoulder.
– Lightly brace the abdominals and squeeze the glutes to set the pelvis neutral.
– Lift the hips until your body forms a straight line from head to heels; keep the chest and hips facing forward.
– Keep hips level; do not let the top hip roll back or the bottom hip drop.
– Maintain steady breathing; avoid breath-holding.
– Lower the hips to the floor with control to finish, then carefully exit the straps and repeat on the other side.
– Avoid: elbow outside the shoulder, shrugged shoulder, flared ribs, sagging or piked hips, or rotating the torso toward the floor or ceiling.

Suspension Side Bridge Beginner Introduction

The Suspension Side Bridge is a suspension-trainer core drill that challenges the body in a sideways plank position with the feet supported in straps. Because the lower body hangs from an unstable anchor, the trunk has to work hard to stop the torso from tipping sideways or rotating, rather than creating big visible movement. This especially targets the side abs and the side of the lower back, with help from the upper glutes, the muscles around the shoulder, and smaller stabilizers near the shoulder blade.

Throughout the hold, the body forms a long, aligned line from head to feet, demanding steady control through the midsection, hips, and shoulders. Attention to level hips, relaxed yet active breathing, and a strong connection between the ribcage and pelvis turns this into a full-body stability challenge rather than just a side-body strength move. The added wobble from the straps boosts the requirement for precise posture and shoulder control, making this exercise a focused way to build integrated strength against unwanted twisting.
