Side Push-Up

Side Push-Up Exercise Description

The Side Push-up (side-lying triceps press) is a bodyweight press performed on your side that emphasizes elbow extension strength. The primary mover is the triceps brachii of the lower arm, with assistance from the pectoralis major and anterior deltoid. Your obliques, glutes, and deep trunk musculature work isometrically to keep the hips and shoulders stacked and the spine neutral. Because the body isn’t in a plank, this variation isolates the press more and reduces the tendency to compensate with the hips or low back. It’s a simple, equipment-free way to build unilateral pressing control and scapular stability while maintaining clean alignment.

How To Do The Side Push-Up Exercise

‘- Lie on your left side with legs straight and stacked; keep a long, neutral spine and level pelvis.
– Place your left palm flat on the floor just in front of your left shoulder; fingers forward or slightly outward. Stack wrist under elbow.
– Rest your right hand lightly on your left shoulder or upper arm to help keep the shoulders stacked.
– Set your shoulder: draw the left shoulder blade slightly down (avoid shrugging) and keep the neck long.
– Brace your midsection and glutes so your ribs stay down and your hips don’t roll.
– Press through the whole left palm, extending the elbow to lift your torso until the left arm is straight without snapping into a hard lockout.
– Keep your body in one line—no twisting toward the floor or leaning back.
– Lower under control until your left shoulder lightly contacts the floor without collapsing; maintain tension.
– Breathe continuously—exhale as you press up, inhale as you lower.
– Switch sides to train the other arm, keeping the same stacked alignment and controlled tempo.

Side Push-Up Tips

‘- Keep your legs straight and stacked with a long, neutral spine and level pelvis.
– Place your lower palm flat on the floor just in front of the same-side shoulder, with the wrist stacked under the elbow.
– Point your fingers forward or slightly outward to match the described hand position.
– Rest your top hand lightly on the lower shoulder or upper arm to help keep your shoulders stacked.
– Gently draw the working shoulder blade slightly down and keep your neck long to avoid shrugging.
– Brace your midsection and glutes so your ribs stay down and your hips don’t roll.
– Press through the whole palm and extend the elbow until the arm is straight, avoiding a hard, snapping lockout.
– Keep your body in one line as you press—avoid twisting toward the floor or leaning back.
– Lower under control until the working shoulder lightly contacts the floor without collapsing.
– Breathe continuously, exhaling as you press up and inhaling as you lower, and match the same alignment and control on both sides.

Side Push-Up Beginner Introduction

The Side Push-up (side-lying triceps press) is a bodyweight strength drill done on the floor while lying on one side. The lower arm drives the motion, pushing the torso away from the ground so the elbow straightens against resistance. This places the triceps in a leading role, with help from the chest and front of the shoulder. Because the body is turned to the side rather than held in a full plank, the effort centers more on the pressing arm instead of the hips or lower back.

Throughout the movement, the midsection, side abs, and glutes hold a steady, braced position to keep the body lined up from shoulders to legs. The torso remains stacked rather than twisted, giving the core a stabilizing role instead of a big bending or crunching action. This side-lying version also highlights control around the shoulder blade and promotes even strength from side to side, since each arm works on its own. It offers a simple, equipment-free option for practicing pressing strength, body awareness, and controlled alignment.
